The importance of expressing joy

Expressing joy in Christ is important because it reflects our trust in God’s sovereignty, strengthens our faith, and serves as a powerful witness to the world.

Joy as a Fruit of the Spirit
Biblically, joy is not a fleeting emotion but a deep, abiding fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23). It is a gift from God that flows from our relationship with Him, not from our circumstances. When we express joy, we are living out the transformation of the Gospel in our lives.

Joy in Trials and Suffering~
True Christian joy persists even in hardship. James 1:2–3 says to “consider it pure joy” when facing trials, because they test and strengthen our faith. 1 Peter 1:8 speaks of “inexpressible and glorious joy” in believing in God, even without seeing Him. Expressing joy in suffering shows that our hope is in Christ, not in the world.

Joy as a Witness to the World~
When non-believers see Christians living with genuine joy, even in difficult times, it becomes a testimony to the transforming power of God’s love. Jesus said, “By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another” (John 13:35), and joy is a natural expression of that love.

Joy in Worship and Community~
The early church was described as a joyful community (Acts 2:46–47), sharing meals and praising God with gladness. Expressing joy in worship and fellowship strengthens the body of Christ and fosters unity.

Practical Encouragement~
Paul urged believers to “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4) and to rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15). This means intentionally focusing on God’s grace, praying, giving thanks, and keeping our minds on what is true, pure, and praiseworthy.

In short, expressing joy in Christ is important because it is a divine gift, a sign of our faith, a source of resilience, and a living testimony of God’s love. It transforms how we live, relate, and share our faith with others.

If we could actually share in the joy of the Lord, nothing could be greater and nothing would be more stable and lasting.
